Timor-Leste: The Birth of a Nation

In 2000, Mary Wald made her first trip to East Timor, now Timor-Leste, where she and José Ramos-Horta established the Fund for East Timor to raise school supplies and other essentials for the country. In 2002, with the UN Foundation, Mary webcast the nation’s Independence Day celebrations from Dili, when the UN formally handed over the reins of the country and Timor-Leste became the world’s youngest democracy. She hosted a VIP luncheon at the UN when the new country was inducted into the UN.

Between 2007 and 2012, when Ramos-Horta served as President of Timor-Leste, Mary served as his webmaster, training the presidential staff and assisting on international media editing and placement, a function she continues to assist on today.
